You’ve probably seen “ceramic” on a pan before. But what does that actually mean? And is it really safer than the black non-stick coating you’ve been using for years? We’ll explain it without complicated jargon.
What exactly is Teflon?
Teflon is a brand name for PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a plastic coating that was the standard for non-stick pans for decades. It works well: eggs slide off, sauces don’t stick, and cleaning is a breeze. But there’s a downside.
PTFE belongs to the PFAS family — a group of thousands of chemical substances often called “forever chemicals.” Not because they last forever, but because they hardly break down in your body or in the environment. If damaged or heated above 260°C, particles can be released that you inhale or ingest through your food.
What many people don’t know: PFAS have now been found in the blood of 97% of the people tested. According to the RIVM, people in the Netherlands are already taking in more PFAS than is healthy. And a large part of that exposure simply happens at home — in your own kitchen.
So what is ceramic?
A ceramic non-stick coating is made from inorganic material based on silicon and oxygen — think sand, not chemicals. No PFAS or PTFE are used in production. The coating is heat-resistant, scratch-resistant under normal use, and contains no toxic substances that are released when heated.
In the past, ceramic had the reputation of being “less non-stick than Teflon.” And that was true ten years ago. But modern ceramic coatings have improved a lot. As long as you treat them well — don’t heat them empty, don’t use metal utensils — they’ll last for years.
What’s the practical difference?
| Teflon (PTFE) | Ceramic | |
|---|---|---|
| Non-stick | ✓ excellent | ✓ very good |
| PFAS-free | ✗ | ✓ |
| Safe when damaged | ✗ | ✓ |
| Dishwasher-safe | sometimes | yes (Safecourt does) |
| Lifespan | 1–3 years | 3–5+ years with proper use |
How do you use a ceramic pan properly?
A ceramic pan comes with a short learning curve. But if you remember these three things, it will last for years:
- Never heat it empty. Always add a little butter or oil first, and only then put it on the heat.
- Use silicone or wooden utensils. Metal scratches any coating — including ceramic.
- Wash it by hand. Dishwashers are technically possible, but hand-washing extends its lifespan.
Conclusion
Ceramic isn’t a hype. It’s a conscious choice for anyone who wants to cook without wondering what ends up in the pan with your food. Safecourt pans are fully ceramic, PFAS-free, and independently tested. Not because it sounds nice — but because it’s the standard we follow at home too.
