You might not think about it, but every morning when you froth milk, cut vegetables, or heat a pan, you come into contact with substances you'd rather not have in your body. PFAS, Teflon, microplastic – these aren't words you'll find in your recipes, but they are in your kitchen cabinets.
What exactly are PFAS?
PFAS is a collective name for chemical substances used to make products water- or grease-repellent. Think of pans with non-stick coatings, food packaging, and even baking paper. The problem? PFAS do not break down in the environment and accumulate in our bodies. Research shows they are linked to hormonal disruptions, reduced fertility, and even certain types of cancer.
What about Teflon?
Teflon is a brand name for a widely used PFAS coating. That “non-stick” layer on your pans? There's a good chance it's Teflon. When heated, this layer can release harmful fumes – especially if the pan is damaged.
Microplastic in your food
Even cheap plastic kitchen tools can release microplastics, especially when exposed to heat or friction. Think of mixers, milk frothers, and plastic knife blocks. These micro particles can enter your body through food.
Time for awareness
Fortunately, there are safe alternatives. Think of pans without toxic coatings, glass milk frothers, and kitchen tools made of stainless steel or ceramic. At Safecourt, we do everything to make that switch as easy as possible – without compromising on style or convenience.
