Why your airfryer probably contains PFAS
Most airfryers have a black non-stick coating on the inside of the basket. That layer often contains PFAS, also known as Teflon (PTFE). If damaged, worn, or exposed to high temperatures, these substances can be released.

What exactly did the Consumentenbond find?
The Consumentenbond tested 5 popular airfryers from different brands for PFAS. In all 5 models, fluorine-containing substances were found. Manufacturers confirmed that their tested airfryers have a PTFE coating, a type of PFAS.
The Consumentenbond concludes: “It likely holds that if a manufacturer says nothing about PFAS, there’s a good chance PFAS were used in the airfryer.”
What are PFAS and why are they a problem?
PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances) are chemicals that hardly break down in nature. They are called “forever chemicals.” They are found in non-stick coatings, rainwear, packaging, and cosmetics. RIVM has shown that virtually all blood samples in the Netherlands contain too much PFAS.
With airfryers, the problem lies in the black coating of the basket. With wear, scratches, or high temperatures, PFAS substances can be released and end up in your food. The older and more damaged the coating, the greater the risk.
What other risks come with an airfryer?
Besides PFAS, there are more concerns when using an airfryer. Acrylamide can form when starchy foods (such as potatoes) are heated too hot or for too long. The World Health Organization considers acrylamide possibly carcinogenic.
In addition, fine particles are released when using an air fryer, and overheating oil can create harmful substances such as aldehydes. The Dutch Consumers' Association advises using the air fryer under the extractor hood and not browning food too dark.
